Do Sunglasses Help Night Vision?

Do sunglasses help night vision?

Most days during daylight hours the sun is out, or at least it is light outside. This means that our eyes will adjust to the light, and even more so to glare or bright sunlight.

That's when we grab our sunglasses and put them on to protect our eyes.

But what if it isn't all that bright during the day and you don't need sunglasses, but you know that you have something to do outside later at night?

Would wearing sunglasses really help when night comes?

Consider This:

Studies have shown that night vision can be reduced by as much as 50% by exposure to sunlight during the day.

Wearing a good pair of sunglasses during the day will improve night vision considerably.

Military Operations

The military has known for decades that troops going on night operations need to prepare their eyes during the day.

They accomplish this by keeping their eyes in low light conditions by wearing dark sunglasses during the day.

This will decrease their night vision adaptation time to a minimum.

Pilots and Truck Drivers

Those whose professions involve periods of time during their travel going from daylight to night light also experience adaptation time issues.

Wearing a good pair of sunglasses during daylight hours, regardless of lighting conditions, will keep this adaptation time to a minimum.

What Are A Good Pair Of Sunglasses?

A good pair of sunglasses would reduce visible glare and sunlight to a comfortable level, eliminate most ultraviolet and infrared light, produce no distortion, transmit color with little or no alteration, fit comfortably and are durable.

This is why when shopping for a pair of sunglasses you shouldn't simply grab a pair of cute sunglasses from a rack in the grocery store aisle or at your local pharmacy.

Puchasing a good pair of sunglasses should involve some research and a bit of thought because sunlight, and ultraviolet radiation in particular, can damage your eyes or cause disease in your eyes.

So choose wisely.

In the meantime protect your eyes at all times Hersch!
