One of the new lines we have taken is Flying Eyes Optics, an innovative and quality focused company who are manufacturing a new line of sunglasses which are unique in the pilot sunglass marketplace. Flying Eyes was formed by pilots and engineers who recognized that with the new evolution of headsets for pilots, there was a need for a better design for pilot sunglasses.

As pilots, we need to be able to communicate with tower, approach, and enroute controllers who issue us instructions regarding aircraft traffic, routes changes, approach instructions, and ground manuevering. Today's modern aircraft also now travel at higher altitudes and at higher speeds, which generates more cockpit noise than many of the older aircraft models. In addition, air traffic has increased substantially in recent years.

This has resulted in the development of improved headset models with ear cups that now are tighter and tighter over the ears to passively reduce cockpit noise, and improve communications with ATC (Air Traffic Control). As this occurred, more and more pilots and other people using headsets began noticing that rigid metal sunglass frames were causing two problematic issues:

  1. Increased pressure on the side of our heads from the strong clamping springs being used on modern headsets, which in turn causes pain and discomfort for pilots who need sunglasses to protect their eyes from harmful UV radiation at the higher altitudes.
  2. The resultant gap formed between the ear cup and the pilot's head caused by the frames allows noise leaks that interfere with radio communications with Air Traffice Controllers.

Flying Eyes founders spent a lot of time exploring many different brands of sunglasses for pilots in an effort to find which, if any, were comfortable, that would help reduce noise, and which would protect the pilots eyes. This research convinced the founders that there needed to be a better solution than what existed in the past.

As Flying Eyes Optics began developing their new line of pilot sunglasses, they began to realize the design that was great for pilots would also work for motorcyclists who wear close fitting helmets. Motocyclists could not find any sunglasses thin and pliable enough to work under their helmets and keep their heads comfortable at the same time.

What Was The Solution?

The team at Flying Eyes discovered a material used in aerospace which had exactly the qualities they needed for the new frames they were developing. They trademarked the  material which is called Resilamide™,  a material primarily used in the aerospace industry. Resilamide™ is super light and flexible, yet virtually unbreakable.

Resilamide™ temples are ultra-thin (1mm), flexible, and durable temples designed by Flying Eyes Optics for sunglasses worn under helmets or headsets. Resilamide™ -- a material that is primarily used in aerospace because it is super light and flexible, yet virtually unbreakable. Made from a specialized polymer, they prevent pain and noise leaks by wrapping around the head instead of over the ears, ensuring all-day comfort for pilots, motorcyclists, and cyclists.

Key features and benefits of Resilamide™ temples include:

  • Extremely Thin and Flexible: At only 1mm thick, they easily slide under headsets, helmets, and hats without causing pressure points or headaches.
  • Durable Material: The polymer is nearly unbreakable, with some, such as from AOPA, reporting they can bend 180 degrees without breaking.
  • Comfort-Focused Design: They are designed to wrap around the head rather than over the ears to eliminate discomfort.
  • Optimized for Noise Control: By being so thin, they do not create gaps in headset ear seals, preserving noise cancellation.
  • Versatile Application: They are used in both sunglasses and prescription frames, often featuring magnetic clip-on lenses.

Having solved the frame problem, Flying Eyes turned their efforts to the next part of the frame, the lenses. While the focus of their mission has been the frames, the choice of lenses was to choose a lens material that would provide excellent clarity without sacrificing durability or color accuracy. Because glass is both heavier than any other eye material, and that glass tends to be fragile, Flying Eyes Optics chose shatterproof polycarbonate for all of their lenses.

All of the non-prerscription polycarbonate lenses provide 100% UVA/UVB blocking, even if the lenses are clear or colored. The lenses also come in a wide variety of gradient shades where the standard tint is in the middle of the lens, at the top is a darker tint to block more harsh sunlight, and a lighter tint towards the bottom for a clearer view of your instrument panel and dashboard.

Everything about Flying Eyes sunglasses is geared towards maximum comfort for pilots and motorcyclists, maximum protection for your eyes, and a frame and temple combination to last a lifetime. Every pair of Flying Eyes Optics sunglasses come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty, and a One Year Lens Replacement Guarantee.

And, if that isn't enough, should your lenses need replacement after the one year lens warranty runs out, Flying Eyes will sell you another pair of easily exchanged lenses at a nominal cost. Currently, they are $ 69.00 a pair.

We encourage you to take a look at all of the various frames and lenses on our website at Flying Eyes Sunglasses. Whether you are a pilot, a motorcyclist, or simply want the most comfortable and best fitting sunglasses on the market today, one of our Flying Eyes sunglasses are sure to meet your requirements.

Within those offereings are the very popular Cooper Aviation pilot aviator sunglasses which have made a lot of pilots wearing tight-clamping headsets very happy.
