A Guide to Flying Eyes Sunglasses

About Flying Eyes Optics

A Vision Born in the Sky

Flying Eyes Optics was founded by Dean Siracusa, a 2,200-hour single-engine land pilot with an instrument rating. Dean, a graduate of the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, combined his love for aviation with his engineering background to create sunglasses specifically designed for pilots and other headset wearers. As an avid aviator, he realized the need for comfortable, practical eyewear while flying his own Meyers 200 aircraft, leading to the inception of Flying Eyes in 2012 in Austin, Texas.

From Photography to Optics Innovation

Dean’s professional journey began in college, working for Road & Track Magazine as a photographer, later traveling the world photographing renowned automotive brands. He also founded Transtock, Inc., a stock photo agency focusing on transportation imagery, and later, Siracusa Productions, Inc., which produced visuals for the automotive industry. Despite his achievements, Dean’s passion for aviation drove him to solve a unique problem faced by pilots: uncomfortable sunglasses that interfered with headset use.

The Birth of Flying Eyes Sunglasses

Flying at higher altitudes exposes pilots to intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation, making quality eyewear essential. However, traditional metal-framed sunglasses create pressure points when worn with tight-fitting headsets, leading to discomfort and even distraction in the cockpit. Recognizing this need, Dean engineered sunglasses with lightweight, flexible temples designed to fit comfortably beneath headsets and helmets, eliminating the pain associated with conventional frames.

Innovative Design and Durable Materials

Flying Eyes sunglasses feature super-flexible temples made from a patented, ultra-light material that contours to your head rather than curving around your ears. Combined with shatterproof polycarbonate lenses, these sunglasses are nearly unbreakable—ideal for pilots, motorcyclists, and anyone needing a comfortable fit while wearing a headset or helmet.

Beyond the Cockpit: Versatile Sunglasses for Every Adventure

Flying Eyes' unique design quickly gained popularity beyond aviation. Motorcyclists found them to be the perfect fit under full helmets, offering essential UV protection without sacrificing helmet comfort. Our ophthalmic line now serves gamers and others who wear headsets for extended periods, providing relief from discomfort and added eye protection.
