A Guide to Scheyden Sunglasses

Scheyden (pronounced as shayden) Precision Eyewear Sunglasses have been around for almost 20 years, and yet I am willing to bet most of you have never heard of them.

The Scheyden Precision Eyewear collection is manufactured to the same technical standards as aerospace products, and built to the highest standards of durability, precision, and optical performance.

The owner and developer of Scheyden Sunglasses is a pilot by the name of Jeff Herold, an avid golfer, and businessman.

There are a lot of interesting golf courses around the country, and to drive to them when you are a busy businessman was a bit too much for Jeff.

So, his solution to the problem was to learn how to fly.

Soon, Jeff found that he couldn't find any comfortable pilot sunglasses to wear under his headset. The ones he tried pinched his ears where the arms (temples) went back over his ears and under the headset he wore.

In addition, most of the aviator and pilot-style sunglasses he tried out were a bit heavy on his nose.

As a result, Jeff decided he would make some great sunglasses for pilots and golfers. The result has been a variety of high-quality, precision-made sunglasses for golfers, pilots, and sailors.

After conducting a lot of research, he discovered a small community in Fukui, Japan. This community consisted of local craftsmen who were producing some of the finest eyewear in the world.

Armed with this information, Scheyden Precision Eyewear was born.

Once the negotiations were complete and production began, the Scheyden mission statement was created. Here is what Jeff Heerold has to say about their sunglasses:

"For those whose lifestyle demands precision, Scheyden delivers. Whether it is work, travel, or play our customers are dedicated and passionate about every activity they take part in. This is why we are committed to creating the finest handcrafted eyewear, watches, and flight crew luggage in the world to meet those demands."

Jeff Herold
Owner and Pilot

First, the Scheyden Originals were born.

The first products manufactured were sunglasses for pilots and included the Avalon, Fixed Gear Albatross, Fixed Gear Maverick, Revelry, and Revelstoke aviator-style sunglasses.

Pilots will recognize the term “Fixed Gear” as it relates to whether or not an aircraft has a retractable landing gear system installed. It’s easy to see why Scheyden chose this monicker.

One of the first things that make Scheyden pilot sunglasses so great is the use of titanium for the sunglass frames.

Not only is titanium half the weight of normal sunglass frames, but they are very strong, surprisingly resilient, and do not interact with your skin nor cause your skin to develop a rash or discomfort.

Titanium, it turns out, is the perfect material for those who experience deterioration of their sunglass frames due to interaction with sweat and body oils which cause steel and metal frames to discolor over time.

Next, Scheyden pilot sunglasses come with crystal clear mineral glass lenses with the highest optical clarity available making them a great choice for pilots and anyone involved in outdoor sports.

If you require prescription lenses, then CR-39 plastic lenses are substituted for mineral glass lenses.

Soon, members of the USAF Thunderbirds discovered Scheyden eyewear for pilots and found that Scheyden Maverick sunglasses worked well for their mechanics as well as their pilots.

They are an excellent choice for student pilots, recreational pilots, or even commercial pilots.

Titanium Frame Technology

Titanium, it turns out, is ultra-light, incredibly strong, and very comfortable when designing quality pilot sunglasses.

These Titanium frames are not only stylish, but they are also the strongest and lightest material available for aviator sunglass frames. The frames come with spring-loaded hinges for the temples, soft silicone nose pads, and cloisonné temple tips.

This frame can be fully adjusted to fit the desired comfort of any aviator. There is 7mm of high-quality acetate on the temple piece (Albatross, Mustang, C-130) which aids in blocking side glare. Each frame is designed to be worn with or without a headset, helmet, or hat for several hours without discomfort.

Hybrid Composite Frame Technology

The world’s most comfortable composite/metal hybrid frames

Scheyden Cedar Rolled Composite (CRC) frame technology affords superb comfort with style. The frames are equipped with triple barrel hinges, soft silicone nose pads, and hypoallergenic High Nickel Silver (NiG) temples with cloisonné tips.

These are by far the world’s most comfortable composite frames designed to be worn with or without a headset, helmet, or hat for several hours without discomfort.

Sailors and anglers looking for a stylish yet comfortable wrap frame to block outside glare will fall in love with these frames.

Composite Frame Technology

The Only Popular "Wayfarer" style frame that can be comfortably worn with a headset.

The composite frame brings a timeless style blended with aviation function for pilots. The Waylite is fashionable, comfortable, and durable.

As the first of its kind, the Waylite frame is ideal for a wide range of faces. Each pair is equipped with triple barrel hinges and incredibly strong T-90 composite materials.

Feather weight and comfort were at the forefront in the design of this frame. CR39 high clarity lightweight polymer lenses aid in that design.

They are available in either polarized and non-polarized versions.

One of the most  unique features is the Waylite temple; it is the thinnest and most comfortable composite temple you will ever find.

The Waylite adds the fashion of a popular frame style with the function and comfort a pilot or anyone wearing a headset needs.

Lens Technology

The lenses used by Scheyden come in three different versions: Mineral Glass, Trivex, and CR-39 plastic lenses.

Every lens is treated with premium coatings for optimal performance and viewing experience.

Mineral glass lenses are the Cadillac of lenses because of their unmatched optical clarity with the lowest amount of distortion. These are the preferred lenses for non-prescription sunglasses. Mineral lenses are thinner than plastic and have incredible scratch resistance.

CR-39 optical polymer are excellent for prescription lenses, as are Trivex lenses (which are special order lenses).

When it comes to lenses, the most important thing to remember is to store your sunglass lenses when not in use. It is also important to clean your lenses with soaper water, pat then dry with a microfiber towel, and polish with a Scheyden cleaning cloth.

 Conclusion

Scheyden sunglasses are an excellent choice for anyone who appreciates fine workmanship, durable frame technology, and lenses that enhance optical clarity.

Started for pilots, these sunglasses have continued to be a top choice for professional pilots and outdoor sportsmen who appreciate the finest sunglasses available.
