A pair of Eagle Eyes Freedom Non-Polarized Black Frame Green Lens sunglasses.
Let's be honest, most people purchase sunglasses for one of two reasons: to reduce the danger of the sun's UV rays to their eyes, or to look cool. And, I am not putting anyone down, regardless of their reason.
But after thousands of hours flying airplanes and sailing, I can tell you this:
Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory, they are in fact an important item to carry and wear to protect your eyes. The reason is simple: there are many dangers
But, with so many choices in sunglasses that range in cost from $ 10 to $ 500 and higher, how do you know what to buy? Are those sunglasses you find in the pharmacy aisle for $ 10 really any good? If your wealthy, then price doesn't matter, but even if you are wealthy, should you still take care when purchasing sunglasses to protect your eyes?
The clear answer is yes!
But, what should you look for? If you purchase them just becasue they look cool, or make you look cool, do they really help your eyes?
When considering a pair of sunglasses there are a number of things to consider:
- How well do they protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation?
- What material are they made of?
- Do they block the proper wavelenghts of light?
While keeping the lenses safe from scratches or damage may seem to be important, the visual acuity the lenses provide is far more important!
Visual acuity is how sharply a person can see at a distance. It is normally checked when you are at your doctor's office when they ask you to read lines of letters at a distance. This is done using a Snellen Chart which places rows of ever smaller letters from top to bottom on the chart.
Doctors are looking for 20/20 visual acuity, which is considered nromal, which means you are able to see at 20 feet what the average individual can see at 20 feet. But, is there another component to visual acuity?
NASA Finds The Secret
The answer turned out to be simple: figure out why Eagles can see so well, even under the water when hunting for fish.
It turns out the eagle's visual acuity is as much as eight times sharper than the visual acuity of humans. No one had ever figure out how the eagles could see so well until a group of NASA engineers studied this phenomenon and discovered why.
It turns out the eagles eyes are coated by special oil droplets made by their bodies, and this enables eagles to spot their prey at great distances, even underwater, no matter what the lighting conditions are.
Once these unique lens coatings were analyzed and ultimately synthsized the NASA scientists knew just how to make the best lenses for astronauts. Soon, astronauts were walking the face of the moon with these new lenses.
