The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is the Air Force's largest and only strategic airlifter, can carry more cargo further with six each Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs), or five helicopters. This military transport aircraft was developed for the United States Air Force and entered service in 1969. All 52 C-5s in service have been updated to the C-5M Super Galaxy.

The C-5 was designed as a larger updated transport compared to the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter and Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. The Lockheed C-5 made its maiden flight in 1968 and entered service in 1969. 

A workhorse of the US Air Force, the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy played a key logistical role during both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as providing humanitarian aid in the aftermath of various natural disasters.
