From its initial identity as the Hughes Model 369, the MD-530 serves both as a military and civilian use helicopter known for it's high altitude and lift capabilities.

It has been in production since 1975 and remains in use today for the military, law enforcement, search and rescue opertaions, as well as aerial survying and photography.

The spotlight ultimately centered on three: Hughes’ Model 369, Fairchild-Hillier’s H23 Raven, and Bell’s early OH-58 Kiowa model.
